To that end, we pursue sustainable strategies that reduce our products’ and facilities’ environmental impacts, improve employees’ health and safety, and invest in the well-being of our plant communities.
Our commitment extends beyond the U.S. into all the countries in which we operate. Following are several pillars of our philosophy – and how we’re putting them into practice:
- Great products don’t just minimize their own environmental impacts – they actively reduce aggregate environmental impacts and promote sustainable development. Through our involvement in major international organizations such as the Air & Waste Management Association and the International Commission on Occupational Health, we address concerns about climate change, advocating consistent strategies to address both stationary and mobile sources of greenhouse gases. We also lead the way in developing global solutions to environmental issues, including low-emitting diesel and hybrid diesel technology that improves fuel efficiency and paves the way for the nations of the world to reduce their emissions of air contaminants and greenhouse gases. Our highly efficient diesel engines were the first to be certified to 2007 federal standards for emissions of particulate matter and hydrocarbons; and in 2006, we partnered with a supplier of hybrid drive systems to develop
America’s first hybrid school bus.
- A competitive cost structure is also one that achieves maximum productivity by improving employees’ health, safety and security. The company provides a broad range of health care service to approximately 100,000 people around the world, working aggressively to enhance wellness, manage chronic disorders, and improve health inside and outside the workplace. Our comprehensive approach to health, safety and security embraces everything from terrorism to pandemic preparedness.
- Profitable growth is achieved more readily when the company’s energy use is reduced, facilities’ waste and environmental impacts are minimized, and the company has a positive impact on the community. Navistar and its partners work hard to assure that all facilities meet consistent standards for stationary emissions, reduction in energy use, and reduced production of waste materials. And our community involvement, including our commitments to diversity and technical education, brings economic opportunity to young people whose talents our industry needs.
